Protenus Employee Values Spotlight

Ben Markowitz, Principal Designer

Our mission at Protenus is to advance the science of healthcare by bringing together creative and skilled individuals who are passionate about the security, usability, and applicability of health data. As this information becomes more voluminous, comprehensive, and, as a consequence, more vulnerable, we are building scalable, insightful solutions that address critical issues preventing the efficient, safe, and effective delivery of patient care.

Our team comprises a diverse group of people who come together to achieve this shared mission. To give a glimpse into our culture and highlight the diversity of our team, we’ve asked Ben Markowitz, Principal Designer, to share more about his experience working at Protenus.

What's your role at Protenus, and what do you do?

My title is Principal Designer. However, most of my day-to-day design work is product-focused. I work with our customers, product team, and other internal stakeholders to help design new features and products. I also provide insight and support for other areas of design in the company.

What did you do before coming to Protenus?

My previous professional experience includes serving as design director for a web products and services agency, lead product designer on a small skunkworks team at a large consulting practice, and designing and building products for a marketing agency focused on higher education enrollment.

What initially attracted you to Protenus?

My job prior to Protenus was with an agency. It was great for being exposed to lots of different work and companies, but I missed seeing my work mature and grow. I was always intensely focused on a client or project for 3 to 6 months, and then it was on to the next one. So, I wanted to join a company where I could stay for a while and see the work and product mature. I was also very interested in the healthcare and privacy space.

What's your favorite part of your job?

Definitely the people. Everyone here hits the intersection of smart and nice, and I truly enjoy all my co-workers. That’s been really important over the past year.

What's the most important thing you've learned since starting at Protenus?

It’s OK to try things, make mistakes, learn from them, and then come back and try to tackle a problem in a totally different way. Protenus fosters an environment where we’re encouraged to experiment and learn.

How has working at Protenus impacted your career?

Protenus has given me the opportunity to grow not only as a designer but also as a leader. It’s my longest tenured stop of my career. It has given me the opportunity to work across a lot of different groups and teams within the organization in ways I have not been given the ability to in the past.

What has surprised you the most about working at Protenus?

How adaptable we are. The past year of the pandemic forced us to work in new and different ways — but everyone accepted the challenge head on. We’ve continued to be just as productive as we were before.

In 10 words or less, how would you describe the culture at Protenus?

Smart, friendly people from diverse backgrounds working together, having fun.
