Protenus Employee Values Spotlight

Sherrod Davis, Chief of Staff

Our mission at Protenus is to advance the science of healthcare by bringing together creative and skilled individuals who are passionate about the security, usability, and applicability of health data. As this information becomes more voluminous, comprehensive, and, as a consequence, more vulnerable, we are building scalable, insightful solutions that address critical issues preventing the efficient, safe, and effective delivery of patient care.

Our team is composed of a diverse group of people who come together to achieve this shared mission. To give a glimpse into our culture and highlight the diversity of our team, we’ve asked Sherrod Davis, Chief of Staff, to share more about his experience working at Protenus.

What’s your role at Protenus, and what do you do?

I am the Chief of Staff for the Protenus team and my primary responsibility is to serve as an operational and strategic resource for Nick Culbertson, our CEO, and the rest of the team as we aim to define and lead the Healthcare Compliance Analytics category. My role largely entails making the company and team members more efficient by ensuring we have alignment and clarity across the organization.

What did you do before coming to Protenus?

Before I came to Protenus, I was the VP of Operations at another local data privacy startup, TrackOFF.

What initially attracted you to Protenus?

Protenus has an awesome reputation in Baltimore. So does Nick, and he was a mentor for my last boss at TrackOFF, who I have a lot of respect for. I met Nick a few times and knew he was someone I could learn a lot from and thought Protenus was at a stage, defining a new Healthcare Compliance Analytics category, where I thought I could add value.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I think the problems we are solving are important in driving healthcare forward.

The people here are brilliant, and I’ve learned so much from everyone. I’m lucky enough to work broadly across the organization, so I get to interact with a bunch of different team members.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned since starting at Protenus?

I’ve learned the importance of communication and techniques for doing so effectively, as we try to get 100 individuals rowing in the same direction.

How has working at Protenus impacted your career?

I’ve met amazing people on the Protenus team, in the healthcare industry, and in the local Baltimore community because of the initiatives I’ve had the privilege of supporting. These relationships are important to me as I continue to grow and shape my career.

I've also had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects and see how disparate systems fit together to move a business forward. I anticipate these relationships and unique experiences will impact my career immensely moving forward.

What has surprised you the most about working at Protenus?

I had been watching from afar as Protenus won Best Places to Work and received other notorieties, but once I joined the team, I realized the hype was real -  it really is a great company in both mission and culture. A lot of companies talk about values but it’s in the fabric of the company here. That’s a testament to the team members they’ve hired.

In 10 words or less, how would you describe the culture at Protenus?

Smart, good people working together to solve big problems.
