Protenus Employee Values Spotlight

Hailey Aranowicz, Accounting Manager

Our mission at Protenus is to advance the science of healthcare by bringing together creative and skilled individuals who are passionate about the security, usability, and applicability of health data. As this information becomes more voluminous, comprehensive, and more vulnerable, we are building scalable, insightful solutions that address critical issues preventing the efficient, safe, and effective delivery of patient care.

Our team comprises a diverse group of people who come together to achieve this shared mission. To give a glimpse into our culture and highlight the diversity of our team, we’ve asked Hailey Aranowicz, Accounting Manager, to share more about her experience working at Protenus.

What’s your role at Protenus, and what do you do?

I oversee the accounting operations, which means making sure all of our financials are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). I work directly with EY auditors when they conduct their annual audit report. I also make sure that we stay apprised of local, state, and federal tax laws and business regulations that affect Protenus, and operate within the proper parameters.

What did you do before coming to Protenus?

I started my career in public accounting at EY where I audited private and public companies in technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and private equity. I was the senior auditor on Protenus’ first year audit with EY. Prior to Protenus, I worked for a private equity firm. I am an active CPA and have a degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland.

What initially attracted you to Protenus?

As an auditor, you tend to bounce around from client to client. After participating in the first year EY audit of Protenus, I thought it would be a great opportunity to work with one company where I could contribute to the growth and success of the business. I knew that my background would provide a lot of value to the finance team, but I also knew this opportunity would expose me to other areas of business. Not to mention that I would have the chance to work with one of Baltimore’s Top CFO’s.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I enjoy the problem solving aspect of it, and a chance to develop processes from scratch. Although we are a private company, issuing financials in accordance with GAAP as well as the depth of our audit is very similar to a public company. Many private companies do not do that, they don’t keep up with the level of a Big Four accounting company. Doing so takes Protenus to a whole other level. By running our books the way a public company would, I find that I enjoy managing the quality of our financials.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned since starting at Protenus?

Keeping up with all of the state and federal tax and business regulations. As we grow it’s more and more important to ensure that we follow these. I also appreciate the importance of the shared consciousness. When I first started, I thought the weekly I/O meetings wouldn’t be relevant to me, but those meetings are critical to our success.

How has working at Protenus affected your career?

It’s been wonderful to work and learn from coworkers throughout the company, outside the finance team. Strategic decisions in all departments affect accounting. From how we structure our contracts, to the type of coding work completed by our engineers, it has allowed me to develop a full understanding of how our company operates and the direction our company is headed.

What has surprised you the most about working at Protenus?

I would say the great culture and the sophistication of our operations. Everyone cares about the happiness and success of each other. Especially now that we’re all fully remote--my coworkers check in with me! Our shift to working remotely has been nearly seamless. We are as advanced, if not more advanced, than some of the larger companies I have worked with, and that’s been amazing.

In 10 words or less, how would you describe the culture at Protenus?

Fun and innovative problem solvers that support work flexibility.
