Large IDN Switches to AI-Driven Patient Privacy Solution for Major Cost Savings

Due to the pandemic, a large Integrated Delivery Network (IDN) needed to rapidly expand its patient privacy monitoring program, but resources were strapped.  Learn how they were able to do more with less and drive huge cost savings and efficiencies after implementing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered patient privacy solution.

The Challenge

A large integrated delivery network (IDN) with over 50 hospitals spread across several states needed to quickly scale its patient privacy monitoring program during the pandemic. Resources were tight due to budget cuts and staffing shortages, but protecting the PHI of an ever-growing patient population remained a priority

The IDN's report-driven manual patient privacy monitoring process severely limited the number of cases its compliance team could accurately review, leaving the organization open to massive reputational, financial, and clinical risk. The team sought to incorporate technology that could help them review all system accesses and resolve cases faster, without increasing headcount.

The Solution

The IDN partnered with Protenus to switch to a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI)-driven strategy to mitigate risk and stretch existing resources further, which included implementing Protenus’ Patient Privacy Monitoring solution.

The Results

Implemented in 2020, Protenus’ Patient Privacy Monitoring solution delivered immediate ROI and dramatic cost savings. With the ability to review up to 100% of system accesses, the IDN saw:

  • 2700%+ increase in cases reviewed
  • 86% decrease in average case resolution time

In the first year, the customer’s compliance team increased the number of cases reviewed by over 1,000 percent, from 106 cases reviewed manually to 1,190 cases reviewed with the AI-powered solution. In the second year, cases reviewed increased an additional 153 percent. The average case resolution time dropped by 75 percent in the first year, from around four months to just over a month. It decreased again in 2021 to just over 17 days.

Leveraging the Protenus AI provided unprecedented efficiency and drastically reduced compliance program costs. Switching to a proactive technology-driven compliance strategy enables the IDN to better protect their patients and organization.
